Some TV's have problems when connecting directly with the HDMI for the first time especially some Sony models to solve this do the below
Connect via the AV leads and change resolution to 1080i.
Reconnect and with the HDMI cable and should now display.
Then try changing back to 1080i, some models of sony wont allow this but most others will.
